Colloid solutions for fluid resuscitation in ICU patients did not lead to significantly better mortality rates at 28 days but they did at 90 days, compared with using crystalloids, French researchers reported in JAMA. Researchers cautioned the 90-day finding was secondary and requires more study, and they said while colloids are thought to be more efficient, data only showed they had an advantage in number of days alive without mechanical ventilation and days without vasopressor therapy.
