The U.N. has voted to create panels to coordinate detection and response to potentially deadly asteroid strikes. An International Asteroid Warning Network of scientists, observatories and space agencies will share information about asteroids and the probability of their striking Earth. A space mission planning advisory group will also be formed to consider how an asteroid might be deflected and the existing Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space will monitor asteroid threats and help plan and authorize deflection efforts if necessary.
