The student-teacher ratio in U.S. schools ranged from the lowest in Vermont, at 10.7 students per teacher, to the highest in California, which averaged 23.4 students per teacher in 2011-12, according to a recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics. The national average is 16 students per teacher, based on a calculation that does include specialist teachers who are not in the classroom daily.
