Because unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions raise the chance of antibiotic resistance and cause adverse reactions, pediatricians should thoroughly assess the severity and symptoms of children with ear infections, acute bacterial sinusitis and strep throat before prescribing the medications, the AAP's Committee on Infectious Diseases said. Antibiotics would benefit children with infections in both ears or severe ear pain and those with severe or worsening runny nose and cough, according to the report published in the journal Pediatrics.
