Alabama policymakers are considering reforms to the state's Medicaid pharmacy benefits, including one proposal that would turn the drug program over to pharmacy benefit managers. PCMA began its "That's What PBMs Do" campaign in the state to educate policymakers on the role PBMs play in keeping drug costs affordable. The campaign is "part of an effort to highlight to Alabama policymakers the role PBMs play in lowering pharmacy costs for public and private sector payers," said Charles Coté, PCMA vice president of strategic communications. PBMs could help Alabama save $513 million over 10 years by making use of preferred pharmacy networks, anti-fraud and waste-reduction programs, and active formulary management, a Menges Group study found.
