In a study that included more than 500,000 children treated at 32 pediatric hospitals in 2010, researchers found that surgical patients accounted for 43% of all antibiotic therapy. Although appendicitis, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, and skin and soft-tissue infection represented just 1% of all children's illnesses, these conditions account for 10% of all antibiotic use. The findings appear in the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
