Major hurdles remain for providing the right kinds of interface between brain and machine before we reach anything like the kind of future envisioned in "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "Robocop," writes John Gever. Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the appropriate parts of the brain for making such connections, and then there's the problem of how to distinguish between mental commands issuing from conscious and unconscious states, among many other issues, according to researchers gathered over the weekend for the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
