Marathon Petroleum has signed an agreement with Enbridge Energy Partners to cover 37.5% of the cost of building a $2.6 billion crude oil pipeline. The 610-mile Sandpiper pipeline will transport Bakken Shale oil from Beaver Lodge, N.D., to Wisconsin. The pipeline is expected to come online by 2016.
The U.S. energy boom, aided by hydraulic fracturing, has contributed to economic growth, but opponents are spreading disinformation to undermine fracking, writes Jack Rafuse, principal of consulting group Rafuse Organization. "[I]t's important to recognize that fracking gives all Americans a source of clean, inexpensive fuel, creates jobs and fuels economic growth. Let's not let disinformation rule the day," Rafuse writes.
Chevron used closing arguments Tuesday in federal court to allege that a pollution verdict in Ecuador was the result of corruption, bribery and fraud. The company asked U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan to stop the Ecuadorean National Court of Justice from enforcing a ruling that requires Chevron to pay billions of dollars for polluting the rainforest.
