Reynosa, a Mexican town near the U.S. border, begins producing Ferrara's candy canes and Bobs Sweet Stripes in the middle of summer with temporary workers arriving in May and June. The workers hand knead the colored strips of hot sugar into the candy canes and bite-size stripes, producing 1.3 billion candy canes each year. Ferrara acquired the candy cane plant when it merged with Farley's & Sathers last year.
