A supportive and collaborative environment at colleges and universities is important to help encourage more women to pursue -- and succeed at -- the study of science, technology, engineering and math, according to Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe. The school offers personalized classroom attention, tutoring by graduate students and weekly lunch chats for female students. Other schools such as Georgia Institute of Technology also are stepping up recruitment of female STEM students.
