Veterans Day should have reminded the LGBT community of the ongoing effects of discriminatory policies like "don't ask, don't tell," writes Rob Smith, a veteran who served in Iraq. Service members who were dishonorably discharged under DADT struggle to gain employment and benefits. "[T]here are still thousands of soldiers who find themselves unable to access benefits for health care, education, and other programs because of the scarlet D for dishonorable discharge that still exists on their records, even post-DADT," Smith writes.
