The nuclear island basemat for V.C. Summer unit 3 in Fairfield County, South Carolina, has been completed, according to South Carolina Electric & Gas. Creating the 32,000-square-foot mat involved a 43-hour concrete placement. "Thanks to the lessons we learned from the unit 2 concrete pour and also from other construction projects, we were able to complete this milestone safely and even more efficiently," said Jeff Benjamin, senior vice president for nuclear power plants at Westinghouse Electric. There are currently 2,000 workers involved in the project, and the number is expected to rise to 3,000 when construction peaks.
