A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine is a step forward for efforts to measure quality in palliative care, University of California, San Francisco, geriatrics professor Dr. Kevin Covinsky writes in GeriPal. The study found that while 86% of patients in the Veterans Affairs Health System received palliative services at some point in an illness, they got just 49.5% of recommended care processes. "If we care about improving palliative and supportive care, we have to start by measuring it," Covinsky writes.
