Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a wide variety in technical skill among a study group of surgeons, and greater technical proficiency was associated with lower readmission rates and fewer postoperative complications. The Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, a statewide effort joining surgeons, researchers and payers, concluded that peer ratings and coaching from "master surgeons" might play a role in future efforts to improve surgical quality.
