AAR and the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association today urged the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to increase federal safety standards for new tank cars used to carry flammable liquids like crude oil, as well as call for the retrofit or phase out of the roughly 92,000 tank cars currently in such service. The industry also said any government action should "take into account factors like tank car manufacturing capacity, demand and input from shippers and tank car owners."
