An estimated 11 billion people will inhabit Earth by 2100, and some experts say that will lead to more emerging infectious diseases as well as bigger challenges in controlling them. A number of zoonotic or mosquito-borne pathogens have caused serious epidemics in the past, and many remain a threat in the present and future, including influenza, SARS, HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
