The AVMA offers some tips to help pet owners avoid emergency veterinary visits during the holidays. Thanksgiving table scraps don't make good treats for pets, says AVMA President Dr. Clark Fobian, and owners should be sure to secure trash. If a pet does eat something it shouldn't, such as chocolate, onions, raisins or other foods, the AVMA recommends calling a veterinarian immediately. Other suggestions include keeping easily overwhelmed pets comfortable in another room and making sure they don't sneak out when your guests leave. Finally, be careful about leaving pets alone with holiday decorations and candles, especially when they're lit.
