A new learning tool will soon be available for veterinary students, thanks to German researchers who have created an equine jugular vein injection simulator. The device is life-size and features a jugular vein complete with "blood" that flows when the vein is punctured. Proper venipuncture is a critical skill for veterinarians, and poor technique can lead to problems for the horse. The device provides unlimited practice for veterinary students and spares live horses repeated venipuncture attempts.
