More than 230 physicians, scientists and legal experts added their signatures to a petition stating there is "no scientific consensus on GMO [genetically modified organism] safety" within a week of its Oct. 21 release by the European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility. "We feel compelled to issue this statement because the claimed consensus on GMO safety does not exist," according to the ENSSER statement. The group also called for "further independent scientific inquiry and informed public discussion on GM product safety" and urged GM proponents to take similar steps.
