Overseas markets are expected to propel Google Play's eventual overtaking of Apple as the leading mobile application market provider, according to App Annie's third-quarter rankings. Device owners downloaded 25% more apps from Google than Apple's App Store in the period, and Google had half as much revenues as Apple compared with only 20% a year ago. Also at Google Play, a new 4.0 release adds a number of features for developers but withdraws support for Android 2.2 -- known as Froyo -- which has seen its penetration dip to 3% of all Android devices.
