In the early 1950s, a joint research from the U.S. Air Force and Army, along with NASA and Sikorsky Aircraft, was working the design of an aircraft that was part jet, part helicopter. The XV-2, dubbed the Convertiplane, was expected to reach speeds of up to 400 knots without compromising vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. The first prototype could only go 165 knots and the project was canceled.
