Most HIV patients have the virus controlled and are living longer, so primary care physicians must be ready to treat their common illnesses and focus on regular preventive care, according to guidelines from the HIV Medicine Association of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. The guidelines, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, said HIV specialists need to understand primary care issues and primary care physicians need to be familiar with HIV care. The updated recommendations also call for HIV patients to be monitored for all relevant age- and sex-specific health problems.
