In this blog post, middle-grades educator Ariel Sacks shares her thoughts on helping middle-school readers, who, she writes, too often, are "simply scanning words on a page," instead of comprehending what they read. She suggests giving students a variety of stories -- from folk tales to graphic novels and beyond -- and allowing them the freedom to choose titles with which they can relate. "Help them reconnect reading with the feeling of following a good plot," she writes.
