Modern inventory management practices can help reduce blood storage duration and patient complications, according to a review in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Researchers found studies in trauma and cardiac surgery that linked increased storage duration with complications such as infection and deep vein thrombosis. "Until results of ongoing randomized controlled trials in the area of storage duration are completed, we cannot recommend a change in the current FDA formal guidelines. However, we encourage surgeons to remain aware of the possible complications associated with red blood cell transfusion," lead researcher Dr. Colleen G. Koch said.
