Crews at work on the $133 million Salmon Creek Interchange Project in Washington state are using 31,000 cubic yards of geofoam -- similar to but stronger than the foam used in packing materials -- instead of earthen fill or crushed rock to support the approach to the bridge. The idea is to make the load lighter and thus less prone to settling or shifting in the event of an earthquake.
