"Jurassic World" kept its No. 1 position at the box office for the third week in a row, taking in $54 million domestically, for a total of $500 million. The animated feature "Inside Out" was No. 2 followed by "Ted 2."
Marvel Studios is emphasizing its move beyond the comic book with a Studios-branded logo shown before the film "Thor: The Dark World" and its ABC television show "Agents of SHIELD." The logo maintains the flipbook feel of the previous logo but uses 3D to deepen the field and drops logos of other studio or distribution partners. "We didn't want to reinvent the wheel, but we wanted it to feel bigger," said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
Boardwalk Piers has purchased the former Sands Casino Hotel site in Atlantic City, N.J., for around $30.6 million. The nearly 20-acre site is on oceanfront property, but was never developed by former owner Pinnacle Entertainment. "We feel it could accommodate many businesses, depending on how the cards fall," said Erin Popper, one of the new owners.
"Monster" director Patty Jenkins has signed on to direct "Thor 2," which could turn out to be the largest movie budget placed in a female director's hands. The Marvel Studios' first "Thor" was budgeted at $150 million, and it's likely the sequel's budget will be much larger, notes one industry watcher, who says the studio's director decision represents a huge step for women in the movie industry.
