Using lightweight and shelf-ready packaging may be more sustainable, but it also can have less protection for food products in the supply chain, writes La Palette Rouge Managing Director Jane Gorick. The packaging may not withstand moisture or pressure, and shipping costs could go up as shippers change their own materials and techniques to make sure these more-fragile products are protected. "It is up to all parties within the industry to work together to ensure that all elements of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging are [optimized] so that the goods reach store in the best possible condition and with minimum cost and environmental impact," she adds.
