An interactive global map illustrates the amount of deforestation that has occurred around the world since 2000. The map, developed by geographers at the University of Maryland, shows that 888,000 square miles of forest were lost between 2000 and 2012, while 309,000 square miles were gained. The map indicates that Brazil has been successful in its fight against deforestation, but Indonesia has had the fastest increase in forest decline, according to a report in Science.
