A study in Health Affairs showed physician numbers may be limited in rural areas but it does not affect the amount of health care provided to fee-for-service Medicare patients or their satisfaction with the care received. The study from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission found little difference in the amount of care provided in urban and rural areas in the same region but found more variation when comparing regions.
