As colleges hire more part-time, nontenured instructors to teach classes, those adjunct faculty members are increasingly joining unions to push for better pay. Adjuncts at Tufts University last month joined the Service Employees International Union, which has been leading an effort to unionize adjuncts in Massachusetts, while other adjuncts are joining the American Federation of Teachers. College leaders say state budget cuts and other financial woes have forced them to hire more part-time faculty.
