Researchers have combined Doppler ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging to allow clinicians to calculate the flow rate of blood, even in capillaries, which are too small for imaging with conventional Doppler techniques. According to a study published in the journal Physical Review Letters, scientists were able to use photoacoustic imaging to track the movement of hot spots created by pulsed ultrasound. They hope the technique can be applied to functional brain imaging, cancer screening and early detection of atherosclerosis.
