California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a law that seeks further protection of the state's groundwater from potential contamination due to hydraulic fracturing. Under the law, well operators will be required to test groundwater around their site beginning next year. "It's important to note that our existing baseline of knowledge about groundwater quality is somewhat limited. One of the successes in environmental protection is it's going to increase our baseline understanding of groundwater," said Jason Marshall, chief deputy director of the state Department of Conservation.
