An Office of Management and Budget report outlined the effects of October's 16-day government shutdown on government-supported research. Four out of five Nobel Prize-winning federal researchers, two-thirds of CDC employees, 98% of National Science Foundation workers and almost three-quarters of NIH employees were furloughed during the shutdown. New basic science research was held up as grants were not disbursed or continued, and the starts of seven clinical programs were delayed.
