An extension to the comment period for proposed rules under the FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act is allowing small and midsize organic growers to express concerns. Many have been hampered by website glitches and completion of this year's harvest, says Anne Schwartz, owner of Blue Heron Farm. Organic growers will face challenges if the rules are enacted, including standards for use of manure and compost, as well as water-quality testing.
