A study from Indiana University and the Regenstrief Institute found the likelihood of hospital readmission was lower if a patient with cognitive impairment was discharged to a skilled nursing facility instead of home or into a family member's care. The data, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, indicated that median time before readmission after discharge to a skilled nursing facility was longer for dementia patients than for patients without dementia.
