Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., urged federal regulators to implement new pipeline safety rules after a pipeline spill in North Dakota and a natural gas pipeline blast in Oklahoma. No pipeline safety regulations have been released by the Department of Transportation since August 2011, he said. "The rapid growth of pipelines serving shale oil and gas production and the continued degradation of existing pipelines likely will outpace your department's ability to develop and oversee new and existing requirements," Dingell wrote in a letter to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
