The average monthly cost for a specialty drug is more than $3,000, and while fewer than 1% of all patients are on specialty drugs, more than 30% of total drug spending in 2012 was on specialty drugs, according to a report from Prime Therapeutics. Pharmacy benefit managers are attempting to rein in costs, but a lack of generic versions and the expanding use of specialty drugs could escalate costs further, Edward Lawrence writes. "Going forward, management of specialty drug costs should be a priority for patients, plans, and the health care system as a whole," Lawrence writes.
