Dr. Noel Bairey Merz of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles told the American Heart Association meeting that women who do not have cardiovascular disease should still get statin medications if their baseline risk supports using primary prevention. Merz discounted studies that did not show clear evidence of preventive efficacy, saying they were not designed to test statin drugs only in women. "So should we withhold treatment for women, who now are the majority of victims of cardiovascular disease, because of low precision and a trial that was not designed to address or answer this question?" she asked.
