A study of mitochondrial DNA from ancient dogs and wolves and their modern counterparts has heated up the debate over where the animals originated. According to a study published this week in Science, dogs evolved from European wolves between 18,000 and 30,000 years ago, but researchers from a separate study published earlier believe that the animals originated in East Asia. Those researchers say the new study is flawed because it doesn't include DNA from East Asian or Middle Eastern fossils.
