Smaller defense firms are cutting jobs and trimming operations in order to stay profitable during sequestration, which comes in the wake of reduced defense spending as wars wind down. In northeast Ohio, defense suppliers such as metal fabrication firm OGS Industries in Akron are cutting costs while looking to commercial work to shore up their businesses. Small defense contractors, says the Aerospace Industries Association, are taking the first -- and hardest -- hits in sequestration.
