Patients with hepatitis C virus who abused injected drugs had higher rates of reinfection and spontaneous clearance, indicating the possible development of partial natural immunity, according to Australian researchers. Shorter duration of injection drug use and reports of recent multiple injection partners were independent predictors of reinfection. The findings highlight the need for public health campaigns about the risk of hepatitis C reinfection, according to the study team.
