Researchers who tracked about 10,500 people from 1987 to 2003 found that those who followed diets strongly linked to inflammation, such as those high in sugar and unhealthy fats, had a 53% higher risk of premature death from all causes than did those with the most anti-inflammatory diets. Those with poor diets were four times more likely to die from gastrointestinal tract cancers than were those with diets least likely to cause inflammation. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Institute for Cancer Research.
