Proponents of a global platform for carbon emissions trading are hoping to garner buy-in during the United Nations climate talks in Poland. However, officials from multiple countries say it's premature to discuss such a venture.
Fighting between Syrian government troops and rebels continues, particularly around the cities of Damascus and Aleppo. Meanwhile, Hezbollah, whose fighters are backing the Syrian government, said it will remain in the conflict indefinitely.
The United Nations is working to expedite aid distribution to people in the Philippines. "We need to get assistance to them now. ... Ensuring a faster delivery is our immediate priority," says Valerie Amos, the UN emergency-relief chief.
Aid workers during emergencies need to be mindful that women's safety is always a priority, experts say. "At the policy level, the leadership, we have recognized the gaps, but the biggest challenge is the implementation on the ground. That's where the difference will be made," said United Nations official Zainab Hawa Bangura.
The first United Nations invention brigade carried out its mission successfully in the Democratic Republic of Congo despite the risks of such an action. The UN's "task is to dissolve political blockage, to end occupation by armed forces, to restore state authority, to bring back hope to the people," says UN special envoy Martin Kobler. "You have to find new instruments to restore the peace," he argues.
