How does treatment of pain in European nursing homes compare from country to country? The SHELTER (Services and Health for Elderly in Long TERm Care) study showed pain treatment in European nursing homes is suboptimal and differs significantly between countries. Up to 24% of those reporting pain did not receive any pain medication and up to 11% only received it PRN. Females received more pain medications than males as did those with cancer and those reporting moderate to severe pain. (Free abstract only.)
