South Dakota state veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven said ranchers have reported roughly 15,500 animals killed during the winter storm there that deposited 4 feet of snow amid severe wind and rain. Most of the animals that died were cattle, but some sheep, horses and bison also perished. Dr. Oedekoven noted that many of the animals appear to have died from congestive heart failure instigated by the storm.
