A pilot project that set standard criteria for palliative and hospice care for cancer patients increased palliative consults from 41% to 82% and reduced 30-day readmissions from 36% to 17% when compared with data from before the intervention, according to Dr. Kerin Adelson of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Adelson said the criteria could be used by any hospital and -- if adopted nationwide -- could improve care for the sickest cancer patients.
