Wal-Mart Supercenter, WinCo and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market took the top three spots in a national-brand food basket comparison by Checkbook that surveyed 22 supermarket chains and more than a thousand consumers on price, service, selection and quality in the Puget Sound, Wash., area. The study found that, although consumers reported better quality, selection and service at high-end grocers, such as Whole Foods, the same consumers were spending between $1,300 and $4,500 extra per year on major basket items. Other top finishers were Fred Meyer, Target, Albertsons and Safeway.
