Basic and clinical research are increasingly one and the same, and epigenetics will simplify instead of complicate cancer research, says cancer biologist Joan Massagué, the new head of the research arm at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "It is ironic that at a time of explosive capabilities, when there are very important deliverables on the table -- delivered -- now is the time when the funding is tougher and tougher every year," Massagué said. Scientists must better communicate to the public the importance and costs of what they do because the public funds research, he said.
