Problems with brain connectivity may be the cause of the learning disability dyslexia, according to a study. Using brain imaging, researchers first looked at how study participants' brains mapped sounds to their phonetic representations, finding to their surprise that dyslexics had intact representations. But the researchers did find problems with connectivity between a region of the frontal lobe linked to speech production and the left and right cortexes. "The data [itself is] perfectly intact, but the connection to access this data is somehow degraded -- maybe too slow or somehow distorted," said KU Leuven clinical psychologist Bart Boets.
