In the wake of Detroit's financial problems, people often ask why we don't just require employers to purchase annuities instead of setting up defined benefit pension plans, writes Megan McArdle, a Bloomberg View columnist. It is possible to buy deferred annuities from insurance companies, but the real problem is that from the beginning of their existence, defined benefit plans were based on unrealistic assumptions, she notes.
